What an Australian CV looks like

Skip the photograph

A photograph is usually irrelevant to whether you can do the job and uses valuable space. A role may have a specific application process, so follow the advertisement first.

Leave out personal status

Birth date, marital status and religious belief generally do not support a hiring decision. Keep the document focused on contact details, capability and evidence.

CV and résumé both appear

Australian employers use both terms. Match the language in the advertisement; the underlying document is usually the same concise record of relevant experience.

What to include in each section

Put your name and reliable contact details first. Follow with a short summary tailored to the role, then list work experience from most recent to oldest. For each position, show the employer, job title, dates and concise evidence of what you delivered. Add education, licences and relevant skills after the experience section. References may be named or supplied on request, depending on the application instructions.

Use the free Australian CV builder to place this structure into a PDF while you tailor the evidence.

Résumé or CV? The Australian convention

Australian employers use both terms. Match the language in the advertisement; the underlying document is usually the same concise record of relevant experience.

CV and résumé are often used interchangeably in Australia. Workforce Australia uses “resume”, while many job seekers and employers also search for and request a “CV”. In most ordinary private-sector applications, both labels refer to the same practical document: a focused record of relevant work, education and capability.

For the companion rules, see the Australian CV format guide. For the letter that introduces that evidence, see the Australian cover letter format guide.

ATS-friendly formatting

Workforce Australia advises a simple, professional layout and describes about two pages as a useful target, while recognising that length can vary. Use an A4 page, readable type, clear headings and common file formats such as PDF or DOCX. Avoid columns or graphics that hide keywords from an applicant tracking system.

FAQ

How do I write an Australian CV?

Start with contact details and a short role-specific summary. Add relevant work experience in reverse chronological order, then education, licences and skills. Use truthful keywords from the job advertisement and keep the layout simple.

What is the Australian CV format for international students?

Use the same evidence-led structure as other applicants. Explain overseas qualifications clearly, state accurate visa or work-right information only when relevant, and focus on Australian experience, placements, volunteering and transferable achievements.
