Resume or CV? What Australian employers expect

Resume and CV are often used interchangeably in Australia. Follow the wording in the job advertisement, then provide the document it asks for. In most ordinary applications, that means a focused record of relevant experience, education, skills and evidence.

The useful convention is clarity: make your recent work easy to find, explain unfamiliar qualifications in plain English and keep personal information that does not support the application out. The role, industry and employer instructions decide what belongs in the final version.

What to include: licences and checks by job

Put a current licence, registration or clearance in a visible Skills or Licences section when the vacancy asks for it. Name the issuing body and status accurately. Requirements can differ by state, role and task, so check the current official guidance before submitting.

Nursing

AHPRA registration is the practical checkpoint for RN and EN applicants: registered nurse and enrolled nurse are protected titles, and only people registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia can use them in Australia.(Sources: Source 1)

The NMBA describes a Diploma of Nursing at AQF level 5 for EN education and a Bachelor of Nursing at AQF level 7 or a master’s degree at AQF level 9 for RN education, subject to approved-program and registration requirements. Internationally qualified applicants should follow the current IQNM pathway and avoid claiming an Australian equivalence without an assessment.(Sources: Source 1 · Source 2)

Example resume entry: Registration: Registered Nurse, NMBA/AHPRA (current) · Bachelor of Nursing (AQF 7). Use this only when it accurately describes your registration and qualification.

Teaching

Teaching requirements vary by state and employer. Western Australia’s Department of Education says teachers must be registered with the Teacher Registration Board of Western Australia and explains that a Working with Children Check and a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check may be required for relevant roles.(Sources: Source 1)

Match the regulator to the job: NESA covers NSW teacher accreditation, QCT handles Queensland teacher registration, and VIT handles Victorian teacher registration. Check the vacancy and the regulator’s current guidance before listing a registration, clearance or permission to teach.(Sources: Source 1 · Source 2 · Source 3)

Example resume entry: Registration: TRBWA teacher registration (current) · Checks: Working with Children Check and NCCHC, if the WA role requires them. Replace these with your own verified details.

Trades

Victoria calls the White Card a General Construction Induction Card. WorkSafe Victoria identifies CPCWHS1001 or CPCCWHS1001, or its superseded unit, and says a construction induction card lawfully obtained in another Australian state or territory is recognised in Victoria. Check the current rule for the state and task.(Sources: Source 1 · Source 2)

NSW plumbing work distinguishes contractor licences from qualified supervisor certificates, with supervised worker pathways described in the state guidance. Electrical licence names also differ: Victoria uses an A Grade electrical worker licence, while Queensland publishes classes of electrical work licence. Name the exact licence or certificate and issuing state.(Sources: Source 1 · Source 2 · Source 3)

Example resume entry: Licences: General Construction Induction Card (White Card), issued in [state] · Electrical: A Grade licence, Victoria. Include only current licences you actually hold.

These notes cover nursing, teaching and trades because their official requirements are state- and role-specific. They are prompts for tailoring a resume, not a substitute for a regulator, employer or registration decision.

Australian resume examples by situation

Graduate

Start with evidence you can explain: placements, paid work, projects, volunteering and relevant training. Put the target role in the summary, then give each example a verb and result. A retail job can show customer communication or rostering when those behaviours match the vacancy. Keep coursework specific rather than listing subjects. If a qualification is overseas, use its official title and explain it in plain English; claim an Australian equivalence only after formal assessment. One focused page can be enough when experience is limited if the reader can see what you did and learned.

Example sentence: Completed a six-week aged-care placement and used structured handover notes to support safe daily care. Use only if it is true for you.

International student or new arrival

Use the same evidence-led structure as other applicants, then remove uncertainty for the reader. State the qualification name, institution, country and date; do not invent an Australian equivalent. Include Australian placements, volunteering, projects or part-time work when they prove a relevant skill. Mention work rights only when the advertisement makes them useful, and state them accurately. Translate specialised duties into plain English before adding industry keywords. Keep passport numbers, visa grant numbers and identity documents out of the resume. The goal is a clear comparison between your evidence and the job requirements, not a full immigration history.

Example sentence: Customer service assistant with experience resolving enquiries in English and Mandarin across busy retail shifts. Use only if it is true for you.

Career change

Lead with the capability that transfers, rather than an apology for changing fields. A short summary can connect previous work to the new role, while a selected skills section names tools, systems or methods you can demonstrate. In each role, choose achievements that show planning, judgement, customer service, safety or teamwork when those behaviours matter in the target vacancy. Add a project, course or placement that closes a specific evidence gap. Keep unrelated history concise and explain the transition in your cover letter or interview. The resume should make the next role feel plausible within the first half page.

Example sentence: Coordinated a 12-person roster and introduced a shared tracker that reduced missed follow-ups. Use only if it is true for you.

Make your resume ATS-friendly

01

Use a single-column reading order

Keep the main text in one clear column where possible. Avoid text embedded in images, decorative charts and sidebars that separate a heading from its evidence.

02

Use ordinary section headings

Choose familiar headings such as Summary, Work Experience, Education, Skills and Licences. Repeat a keyword only when it truthfully describes your experience or qualification.

03

Check the exported PDF

Copy the PDF text into a plain-text editor before submitting. Missing words, scrambled order or unreadable symbols are signs to simplify the layout and export again.

Frequently asked questions

Are resume and CV the same in Australia?

The terms are often used interchangeably in Australian job applications. Follow the wording in the advertisement, then provide a focused record of relevant experience, education, skills and evidence.

What should I include in an Australian resume?

Start with your name and reliable contact details, then add a role-specific summary, recent experience, education and the licences or skills the vacancy requests. Keep claims truthful and supported by examples.

Do I need a photo on an Australian resume?

Usually no. A photo rarely helps an employer assess capability and uses space that can show evidence. Follow a specific instruction in the application process if one is provided.

How do I make my resume ATS-friendly?

Use a readable single-column layout, familiar headings and selectable text. Avoid images that carry meaning, complex text boxes and decorative charts. Copy the exported PDF into a plain-text editor to check the reading order.

Applying for a government role?

Some Australian government and public-sector applications ask for separate written responses to key selection criteria. Copy the exact criterion headings, answer with evidence and follow the word limit in the advertisement.
